Monkstone Club Doubles

The 2023 edition of the Monkstone Club Doubles took place yesterday. A record 36 members took part on a bright sunny and warm October day.

As usual the games were played in a competitive but friendly spirit. Surprisingly after Round 2 there were only 5 teams on 2 wins and the final round saw this cut to only 3 teams with 3 wins.

Sharon Paynter & John Maroney came a very creditable 3rd with 3 wins [+7] and were just pipped by Bernard Adshead & Len Christian on [+11] but the runaway winners were Sean Smith & newcomer Spencer Bartlett on [+34].

It was alleged that Sean had been down at the club practicing since 6am so perhaps practice does pay off!

Magic Little Grants

Monkstone Petanque Club is delighted to announce that it has received a Magic Little Grant through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Community Trust. Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Localgiving is the UK’s leading membership and support network for local charities and community groups. Our project received £500 to help us buy more equipment for non members to play, and to invite local groups and schools to play petanque. With the interest generated from young people the Club intends to start a junior section of the club in 2024. http://www.postcodelottery.co.uk/ http://www.postcodecommunitytrust.org.uk/ Localgiving | Home

This is the second year that we have received a Magic Little Grant to aid our development of the Club and we thank them for their continued support.

Registration for Club Doubles

Play will start at 11am so please be there by 10:45am at the very latest to ensure that we can draw the teams and get started by 11am. Failure to arrive by 10:45am may mean that you are unable to play. Play should finish between 2pm and 2:30pm.

This is a great competition for our newer and less experienced players to enter as playing with more experienced players is the best way to improve your own game.

Super League Round 1

The 2023/24 Super League kicked off this week with some exciting matches. Tuesday saw Mammoths take on Marlins race into a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break but in the reverse matches Marlins pulled out all the stops and pegged Mammoths back to gain well deserved draw.

On Wednesday, Meerkats came up against Mustangs who were in no mood to give ground and Mustangs took the game 4-0. The score though did not do justice

The final match in Round 1 came on Thursday when Mavericks played Mercenaries. Despite some good play by Mercenaries, Mavericks took the first two games. Mercenaries continued to push Mavericks with some good play and they got their reward by taking the final game of the night but still went down 1-3.

The round produced some very good play from our less experienced members and, with encouragement from their team captains and other experienced players in the squad, they will undoubtedly improve particularly in the tactical aspects of the game.
