International Women’s Day Melee

In celebration of International Women’s Day yesterday, Monkstone Petanque Club is proud to have hosted a women’s melee competition which was organised by club member Gill Greenwell. 44 women from various clubs in and around Cardiff took part in the 3 round event.

Cakes and other goodies were provided for the competitors to enjoy during breaks in play.

After a competitive but friendly competition the abacus was got out to compute the results and the following winners were declared.

1st.  Ali Robertson (Llandaff) 2nd. Nicole Blake (Greenlawn)
3rd. Gail Brooksbank (Wheatsheaf) 4th.  Gill Clark (Monkstone)

All agreed that it had been a great day and it was mooted that it should become a fixture in the South Wales petanque calendar.

Well done, especially to Gill for all her hard work in organising the day but also to the other 43 women who turned up to play and the men who came to help and support the event.

Magic Little Grants

Monkstone Petanque Club is delighted to announce that it has received a Magic Little Grant through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Community Trust. Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Localgiving is the UK’s leading membership and support network for local charities and community groups. Our project received £500 to help us buy more equipment for non members to play, and to invite local groups and schools to play petanque. With the interest generated from young people the Club intends to start a junior section of the club in 2024. http://www.postcodelottery.co.uk/ http://www.postcodecommunitytrust.org.uk/ Localgiving | Home

This is the second year that we have received a Magic Little Grant to aid our development of the Club and we thank them for their continued support.

Monkstone PC Open Day

WHAT A GREAT DAY!. When we decided to have an Open Day we had no idea what response we would get. Thanks to a mammoth publicity effort consisting of leafletting the whole of Penylan, posters in shops, churches, community centres, libraries, posts on community Facebook sites and good old word of mouth we had an estimated 60 visitors. Even the earlier rain, before the sun came out, didn’t dampen the fun.  For most of the visitors it was their first experience of Petanque and all said they had enjoyed it. We didn’t expect immediate results but 2 couples joined the club on the spot, others took away membership forms and even more said they would definitely be back.

Here are a few images of the Open Day in full swing:

Monkstone PC Open Day

Monkstone Petanque Club will be holding an open day from 11am till 3pm on Saturday 19 August 2023 which is aimed mainly at the residents of Penylan and adjacent areas. Come along, have a go and see what the game of Petanque is all about. All the details are given below.

Young People Enjoy Boules at Monkstone

Recently Monkstone Petanque Club played host to a group of students with additional learning needs from Coleq y Cymoedd (Nantgarw). The college seeks to give the students experience of all different types of sporting activity.

The group consisted of 5 students and 3 teachers/assistants which divided up very nicely into 2 sets of doubles. Club members Keith Thomas, Roger Griffin, Mike Jones & Bernard Adshead were on hand to explain the game and provide some gentle coaching.

The students had varying degrees of impairment but all took to the game, as did the teachers/assistants, and were very competitive. The Club members found it a very rewarding experience and following the success of the morning, it is hoped that in the future we can host further groups from Coleq y Cymoedd.
