Stuart Clarke Cup – Wenvoe PC

Wenvoe Petanque Club – Sunday 17th March 2013.

Winners of the 2013 Stuart Clarke Cup.

Roger Griffin, John Barnes and Jake Caston (The Wheatsheaf PC) receiving the Stuart Clarke Cup.

Congratulations to Barney, Roger and team mate Jake Caston from the Wheatsheaf Petanque Club for winning the 2013 Stuart Clarke Cup.  The team qualified as one of the top four teams to go into the semi-finals.

The semi-finals saw the trio drawn against one of several home teams to get a semi-final place, Wenvoe 3. The final saw Barney, Roger and Jake drawn against another Wenvoe team, this time the Wenvoe Raiders, a very experienced trio of Jeff Ball, Dai Cannan and Mike Jacques.

After a game of many twists and turns Barney, Roger and Jake took the game 13/9.

Congratulations, the first trophy of 2013 for the Monkstone PC.

President’s Cup – Wheatsheaf PC

The Wheatsheaf Petanque Club (PC) hosted this years President’s Cup, which saw three members of the club compete in the semi-finals. Both Roger and Barney, together with Jake Caston from the Wheatsheaf PC won through to take one of the top four places to play for the Cup. The star player of the day was Rosie, who with Bill Davies (Wenvoe PC) and Gay Evans (Monkstone Inn PC) also won through to the semi-finals, without dropping a game.

The first semi-final drew Roger and Barney against Rosie, unfortunately, for Roger and Barney, Rosie’s team won through to take a place in the final. Both Bill and Rosie pointed exceptionally well, which caused their opposition difficulties.

In the final Rosie’s team came up against a very strong team of Jessie Lepitz-Robic (Penarth PC), Ian Bailey (Monkstone Inn PC) and Kon Tomczyk (Caerleon RFC PC) who took the title.  However, well done Roise on her first solo competition.

All the games were played in arctic conditions and everybody should be congratulated in getting out of their warm beds to make the trip and help to make a good competition.

News Round Up

Many thanks to you all for getting your forms and payments in promptly and ensuring that the club and WPA membership renewal exercise went smoothly. Most of you now have your licences and I’ll catch up with the rest asap. Don’t forget that you will need your licence in order to play in any WPA competitions this season: no licence – no play. For the record, the club currently has 23 paid-up members, which should ensure that we have the numbers to maintain our three league teams.

I would like to officially welcome one returning and two new members: John Chichester, Rose Fiera and Norman Francis. Best wishes for a enjoyable and successful season.

I would also like to congratulate Mike Wigg for being voted the WPA’s Most Improved Player of the Year 2012, a well-deserved accolade for a player who has gone from novice to Welsh international in a very short time.

Finally, I would like to flag up the WPA Veterans competition to be held at our club on Sunday, 24 March. It’s a triples event for over-55s to determine the Welsh team to play in the European version of the competition. Last year Tony Smith qualified and played in Denmark, so let’s get a Monkstone team in the frame again.

Regards,

Roger
