2022 WPA League Cup & Plate Finals

The WPA League Cup & Plate finals were held on Sunday 25 September 2022 hosted by Ystradowen Petanque Club. The event was blessed with fine weather although it was a tad chilly when the sun went in. Welcomes and the other formalities were given by Chris Howard on behalf of Ystradowen PC and Vickie Adshead, League Secretary, on behalf of the WPA before play got underway.

Semi-Final 1 saw SWBRC Seagulls take on Pontyclun Badgers whilst Semi-Final 2 pitted Isca Romans against the only Division 2 team in the finals, Monkstone Minotaurs. Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, the Badgers took the first 2 games off the Seagulls whilst in the other semi-final the Minotaurs found themselves trailing 0-2 to the Romans at the halfway stage. The Minotaurs manged to pull one game back in the reverse games but eventually went down 1-3 [41-45] to the  Romans. In the other match SWBRC Seagulls pulled out all the stops against a Badgers team without some of their top players due to illness and took both games to record a 3-1 [41-33] win.

After a break for lunch the Finals commenced with the Seagulls taking on the Romans in the Cup Final whilst the Badgers and the Minotaurs contested the Plate Final. At the half-way stage, both Finals were poised at 1-1 with everything to play for. In the reverse games in the Cup Final again both teams took 1 game each for a score of 2-2 but the Seagulls came out on top [43-38] to take the League Cup. In the Plate match the Badgers proved much too strong for the Minotaurs on the day and won both games for a 3-1 [49-25] victory to take the League Plate.
