Caerleon v Monkstone – Cup for Clubs

Monkstone fall short after a magnificent start

Monkstone played their last match in the round robin section of this year’s Cup for Clubs at Caerleon on Sunday 19 February 2017. Monkstone needed to win 9 of the 11 games to make further progress in the competition. The match got of to a tremendous start for Monkstone when they won 5 out of 6 of the opening singles. Unfortunately they were unable to sustain the pressure on Caerleon losing 2 of the 3 doubles and both of the triples. Although losing the match on match points, Monkstone did have the satisfaction of winning 6 games to Caerleon’s 5.

Monkstone v Penarth – Cup for Clubs

Monkstone Snatch Victory from the Jaws of Defeat

Last gasp win to come from behind

Play during the Monkstone verses Penarth Cup for Clubs match.

In Sunday’s Cup for Clubs match against Penarth, Monkstone PC started slowly losing the opening six singles games 2 – 4 which, with 2 points per game gave them a deficit of 4 points going into the doubles. Monkstone fared better in this round winning 2 -1 (3 points per game) leaving them with a 1 point deficit at 10 – 11 points with only the two triples left. This meant that Monkstone had to win both the final triples (5 points per game) to secure victory. Penarth, knowing they only needed to win one of the triples fielded one very strong team and one much weaker – thereby being prepared to sacrifice one game to try to secure the one win needed. Monkstone, however, needing to win both fielded 2 teams of comparable strength. Vickie, Tony and Bernard playing the weaker Penarth Mixed Triples team won comfortably upon which all eyes turned to the titanic struggle for the last game. Roger, Peredur and Rose were fairly level pegging for the first half of the game but the thanks to a great over the top shot by Roger they scored 5 on one end and went on to close out the game 13 – 5 giving and overall result of 6 – 5 in games and 20 – 11 in points. Monkstone now go to Caerleon next Sunday needing another win to have any chance of finishing in the top 2 who then play a two leg match – home and away.

2016 Open Doubles – Results

A big thank you to the 15 teams that turned out for the Open Doubles Championship, which was held in perfect conditions, normally reserved for the Mediterranean region.

After a morning of qualification the top 8 teams won through to the main, while the bottom 7 teams played in the B competition.

The final of the Open Doubles was between Len Fields and Jeremy Claire from Pontyclun PC and Jake Caston and Peter Westall from the Wheatsheaf PC and Wenvoe PC, respectively. Len and Jeremy beat the strong pairing of Phil Bradshaw and Ian Bailey in the semi-final. The pairing of Jake and Peter’s experience finally showed and they won this year’s competition.

The B Competition saw Vickie Adshead and Rose Fiera from Monkstone PC and Julie Bailey and Gay Evans from Monkstone Inn PC. After a a close start, again experience showed and Julie and Gay pulled away to win the competition.
