Election of Team Captains – The 2014 Season

The Monkstone Petanque club held their annual general meeting last Wednesday in which they bid farewell to their outgoing Club Captain Jim Harrison. Under Jim’s leadership the club’s top side, the Monkstone Monarchs, remained firmly in the first division, with both the second division sides, the Marauders and the Minotaurs, continuing to succeed and get ever-closer to promotion themselves.

The club’s executive have decided that Jim’s role of Club Captain is to be split between three team Captains for the 2014 season. Paul Milton is to Captain the Monkstone Marauders with Bernard Adshead taking control of the Minotaurs. Finally, Tony Smith will Captain the Monarchs.

It is hoped that this new approach will ensure strong performances by all three teams in the 2014 season and we wish Paul, Bernard and Tony the best of luck.

Cup for Clubs – Round 1, 1st Leg

Members of the club were drawn away to the reigning champions, the Wheatsheaf Pétanque Club on Sunday 17th November. A squad of six members comprising Judith Smith, Jim Harrison (Captain), Keith Nott, Paul Milton, John (Barney) Barnes and Tony Smith.

The first round involved two triples matches, a mixed triple with Judith, Paul and Jim and an open triple of Barney, Keith and Tony. The mixed triples opposition was Gemma Foster, Basil White and Colin Sweet after a very close match we lost 12/13. The open triples opponents were Roger Morgan, Jill and Steve Brace, after a slow start our team won 13/11 – one win each.

The second round was doubles, our mixed doubles team was Judith and Tony Smith and the two open doubles were Keith Nott and Paul Milton and Jim Harrison and Barney.  Tony and Judith faced Gemma and Colin, Keith and Paul opposition was Basil and Jim Hutchinson and the last double saw Jim and Barney taking on Roger and Steve.

All three doubles matches were close run, Judith and Tony lost 11/13, Keith and Paul won 13/8, which left the final doubles to determine the winner.  With two boule in hand and the score at 12/12 Roger had to point another to win, the first failed to reach the jack, but his last boule did the damage and took the win 13/12.

Wheatsheaf – 3 wins points for 58, points against 61, points difference -3

Monkstone – 2 wins points for 61, points against 58, points difference+3

National Veterans Championship

Recently the Monkstone Pétanque Club hosted the Welsh Pétanque Associations (WPA) National Veterans Championship.

Thirteen triples teams from around south-east Wales entered the final championship of the season, which as always was competitively fought. Over the day, six games were played by each of the teams entered, and it soon became apparent that four teams were in the running to take the title.

The home team of Jim Harrison, Roger Griffin and John Barnes (Monkstone Marauders) became the team to beat; the first team that lost to the local trio was the team of Graham Attfield, Tony Smith and Kon Tomczyk (The Barn PC, Monkstone PC and Caerleon RFC PC).

Next the team Age Concern, consisting of three stalwarts of the Welsh pétanque world, Dai Cannan, Mike Jacques (both of Wenvoe PC) and Jake Caston (Wheatsheaf PC, Llanhennock) played the Monkstone Marauders, this time the Marauders lost, placing Age Concern in a strong position to take the title.

The last team in pole position to take the title was GPS comprising Gay Evans, Stewart Spencer (both of the Monkstone Inn PC) and Peter Beresford (Caerleon Club RFC PC) who took on the Monkstone Marauders in the final round of the day. Up to this point GPS had won 5 games and needed the final game to put them on equal wins with Age Concern.

The Monkstone Marauders took a firm control of the game and failed to allow GPS to enter the game, losing 13/0 and thereby failing to achieve their much needed 6th win.

Age Concern - Winners of the National Veterans ChampionshipThis left Age Concern the only team to win all their 6 games of the day with a handsome points difference of plus 48 and taking the 2013 National Veterans Championship title.
