Just to let you all know, the quiz scheduled for later this month has been postponed until later this year in the hope of gaining a few more contestants. The club is sorry to disappoint those members who have entered and hopes to hold a quiz in the autumn.

Monkstone Marauders have been drawn at home to the Penarth Predators and
Monkstone Minotaurs have been drawn at home to the Pontyclun Badgers.

Members of the club have had a busy weekend playing in the annual Grand Prix (GP) Series to endeavour to qualify to play for Wales in two important competitions, the Home Nations and the EPA Inter-Regional Championship.

On Saturday the members of the club were playing at Wenvoe PC in GP1, the results at the end of the day saw the teams lying 9th and 10th.

On Sunday they popped up again in Abergavenny on wonderfully sunny day for GP2, the final results saw both teams lying in 7th and 9th position.

“Three Monkstone teams entered the Over 55s competition held at Wenvoe on a clear but chilly day:

Monarchs – Roger, Barney and Mike Jones;
Marauders – Wiggy, Norman and Peter;
Minotaurs – Bernard, Vickie and Keith.

By the end of the morning’s play, the Marauders had unfortunately failed to qualify for the afternoon’s top 8 knock-out but Bernard’s Minotaurs were one of only two teams that had won all their games. The Monarchs qualified in fifth place.
In the quarter-finals the Minotaurs lost 8-13 to last year’s winners, Age Concern, while the Monarchs beat Tortolla 13-1 to earn a semi-final tie against Age Concern. In a very tight game, the Monarchs emerged the victors, winning 13-9.
In the final the Monarchs faced KPB (Barbara Vaughan, Kon Tomczyk and Phil Bradshaw) but were outplayed, losing 5-13. KPB will now be invited to represent Wales in the Over 55s European Championship in Sweden in June.”
