Many thanks to you all for getting your forms and payments in promptly and ensuring that the club and WPA membership renewal exercise went smoothly. Most of you now have your licences and I’ll catch up with the rest asap. Don’t forget that you will need your licence in order to play in any WPA competitions this season: no licence – no play. For the record, the club currently has 23 paid-up members, which should ensure that we have the numbers to maintain our three league teams.

I would like to officially welcome one returning and two new members: John Chichester, Rose Fiera and Norman Francis. Best wishes for a enjoyable and successful season.

I would also like to congratulate Mike Wigg for being voted the WPA’s Most Improved Player of the Year 2012, a well-deserved accolade for a player who has gone from novice to Welsh international in a very short time.

Finally, I would like to flag up the WPA Veterans competition to be held at our club on Sunday, 24 March. It’s a triples event for over-55s to determine the Welsh team to play in the European version of the competition. Last year Tony Smith qualified and played in Denmark, so let’s get a Monkstone team in the frame again.

2013/14 Membership Fees

Membership fees (both club and WPA) are now due for the coming season. Thanks to those who have already paid. Both fees remain unchanged: WPA £12; Club £18. You just need to make a single payment to the club of £30. If you’re paying by cheque, the payee is ‘Monkstone Petanque Club’.

Petanque: England capture Home Nations Championship Cup on Welsh soil

The Home Nations were hosted by the Monkstone Petanque Club.   Eight teams from England and another eight from Scotland had come to compete for the prestigious Home Nations Championship Cup.   With the Wales squad on home ground, the undefeated English squad were up for some fierce competition.   The Home Nations is played in 12 rounds over two days, and is held in rotation in each of the participating nations’ countries.

The first day of play, saw England win seven out of their eight games, Wales take four wins and Scotland one.   England notched another 12 wins over the next two rounds and Wales 10.   There were further tight games in the fourth round though the next day did not see a good start for the Welsh squad who lost all their games but one against Scotland.   As the day went on the Wales side upped their game and all of a sudden, the all-conquering English outfit were suddenly back in reach.   Games at the end of play were England with six wins, Wales with five and Scotland with one.

Round 10 scores continued to improve for Wales.   The Welsh squad rallied at the 12th round but not enough to take the title from England, who won the Home Nations Championship with 72 wins; second was Wales with 52 wins and third was Scotland with 20.

The Welsh teams, supported by team managers Barbara Vaughan and Tony Smith, fought a valiant fight but it just wasn’t to be.
