Monday Roll-up Returns

Monkstone Petanque Club announced earlier this week the return of the Monday Roll-up albeit in a slightly modified form. For the time being there will be no refreshments offered but it is hoped to re-introduce that in the near future.

Dear Member

Members are advised that the Monday Roll-up will recommence on Monday 17 August 2020 at 10:00am. The number of pistes in use (6) will continue as at present, so there will be a limit of 24 people. There will not be an actual “Roll-up” and the teams will be selected by random draw.

It will not be possible to book a specific piste on a Monday morning but a new “Monday Roll-up” calendar has been added. As for all other sessions, bookings can only be made 7 days in advance and members can only book for themselves. There MUST NOT be more than one name on a booking.

If you have any problems booking please contact myself or Roger Griffin who will be pleased to assist. If you are unable to book because the limit has been reached, please contact myself and, if you want to play the following week you will be given priority.

Members are advised that no practice is allowed before the Monday Roll-up and its continuation is very much dependent on SOCIAL DISTANCING being strictly observed before, during and after play. Please ensure that you are familiar with the “Social Distancing Protocols for Doubles Play” in the current Guidelines on the Club website.

Please could members also remember that the booking system serves as a record of who was playing and when. This would be very important in the event of an incident of Covid-19 infection. If you make a booking for singles or practice and then add someone to that booking you MUST specifically advise Bernard Adshead by email on treasurer [at] monkstonepetanque [dot] org [dot] uk or on WhatsApp on 07768317057 so that the records can be updated. Please do not assume that it will be picked up from other exchanges of e-mails or WhatsApp messages.

El Pres Gets the Game Restarted

Monday 22 June 2020 marked the day when petanque returned to the Monkstone Club after the Welsh Government eased the coronavirus lockdown.

The occasion was marked by Mike “El Pres” Jones throwing the first boule to get us started. Only singles play is permitted so Mike was pitting his skills(?) against Roger Griffin. Before the morning was out we had the Adshead’s showing that they had not lost their touch (“…..didn’t know they had one”, I hear you cry) along with Roger Green & Gill Clark and Sean & Gill Greenwell.

A small step, but nevertheless a welcome return to the sport we have all been missing these past 3 months.

Trish & Bill Win in Tenerife

On their recent holiday in Tenerife, Trish & Bill Mains took part in a number of boules competitions at the hotel where they were staying. Other competitors came from Switzerland, Belgium, France and Spain.

Trish & Bill won 2 competitions playing together and then each won 2 more competitions playing with other partners.

Well done to them both.

The weather wasn’t too good in Tenerife!

Peter Westall – RIP

On behalf of all the members of Monkstone Petanque Club, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to Diane and her family at this difficult time. Peter will forever be remembered as a true gentleman and a good friend to all who were fortunate enough to meet him. In Wales and the many countries that welcomed him as a player and a friend, he will be greatly missed.

Peter was an exceptional boules player. He always had time to help and encourage others, and many of us have benefited from his expertise. He was a former member of Monkstone PC (one of several Welsh clubs he represented) and he always maintained a positive, cheery and supportive attitude to all the membership. This was something you always noticed about Peter, irrespective of the petanque club he represented or whether it was league, national or international competitions. The Welsh petanque community owes so much to Peter.

At a difficult time as this, words cannot always convey the true sadness felt by those who knew Peter. The fragility of life is never more apparent than when you lose someone you know and greatly respect. We have lost a dear friend.

Rest in peace, Peter.
Mike Jones
